Changing of sheaves on the Thialf belonging to HMC

At the start of September 2014, EPMC Europe Crane Solutions was commissioned to change the sheaves and replace the axles and bearings on the world’s largest crane ship, the Thialf belonging to Heerema Marine Contractors. EPMC Europe Crane Solutions changed a total of 327 sheaves on the two 7300 megatons cranes. The old sheaves were removed and new ones installed. All the new sheaves were given new bearings by EPMC Europe Crane Solutions. The assembly was a smooth process thanks to the careful labelling and recording of all new parts.
32 teams working round the clock
To minimise any downtime, the company - in consultation with Heerema Marine Contractors - adhered to a strict time schedule. EPMC Europe Crane Solutions deployed 32 teams who worked 24/7 to ensure that the work was completed on time. The assembly teams, a total of 50 people supplemented by 100 riggers and oilers, stayed on board the Thialf for five weeks to tackle the job. A large number of axles, as well as sheaves and bearings, were also replaced. Since the Thialf has some very specific sheave assemblies, special tools were developed for removal and assembly to ensure that the work could be done safely and effectively.
Safety above all
To ensure a safe and timely completion of the job, three additional mobile cranes were installed on board the Thialf, as well as five temporary lifts for the safe and effective transport of people and materials. Temporary and spacious working platforms were designed and installed at work locations that lacked sufficient working space, enabling people to work safely. Given the huge numbers of people working at the same time as well as people working at heights, it was decided to hold regular toolbox meetings to ensure the workers’ safety. This commitment to safe working practices means that all the work was performed without any incidents. Thanks to the efforts from all our people and subcontractors, the work was completed within the given time schedule and to the full satisfaction of our client. We look forward to working with them again!
